FLIGHT AREA
In the “Spring Meeting 2020 - Friuli Venezia Giulia Trophy " there will be 5 official launch sites, including two foreign take-off sites, located in Slovenia.
An overview of the flight Area.
LAUNCH SITES
Valinis – Meduno (main launch site)
Location: Meduno (PN)
Direction: from SE to SW
Elevation: 980 mt ASL
Height difference: 710 mt above Landing (Castello – Travesio)
Number of ramps: 3
Helicopter landing space: Yes
Coordinates: N 46°13′ 50” E 12° 48′ 25”
The take-off can be comfortably reached driving along an asphalt road and it’s the perfect launch site for Hang Gliding competitions. There is an unlimited area to open Hang Gliders, as well as the numbers of lines available along the amphitheatre, which rises in the west part of the ramp. The launch site is used with winds between SE and SW.
Since 2019, the new hut “Rifugio Valinis”, very close to the launch site, is open.
Passo Pura – Ampezzo
Location: Ampezzo (UD)
Direction: from E to S
Elevation: 1400 mt ASL
Height difference: 800 mt above Landing field (Ampezzo)
Number of ramps: 2 / 3
Helicopter landing space: Yes
The take-off, used until the mid-90s, has been recently recovered. The Municipality of Ampezzo is leading a new project to widen the launch site, in order to arrange three take-off lines. There’s plenty of room to open hang gliders and it can be reached driving along an asphalt road; only the last 200 mt must be run along a dirt road, kept in very good condition. The launch site is used with winds between E and S and so it’s the most suitable take-off in the first hours of the day. Usually it offers an excellent service-thermal, at ca 500 mt west of the take-off. 500 meters far from the launch site there’s a hut/restaurant which can host more than hundred people.
Cuarnan – Gemona
Location: Gemona del Friuli (UD)
Direction: from SE to SW
Elevation: 1180 mt ASL
Height difference: 980 mt above Landing field (Bordano)
Number of ramps: 3
Helicopter landing space: Yes
The take-off, already used with three lines during Italian Hang Gliding Championship 2012, is also the official launch site during FAI Paragliding competitions.
It offers plenty of room to open hang gliders: the take-off lines are about 50 mt one from the other, so that organisers can easily manage take-off times.
The launch site is used with winds from SE and SW. The road to take-off has been realized for the last Italian Hang Gliding Championship 2012 and it’s easily used by normal cars, although the last part is a dirt road, which has a steep slope. In the parking area, where the dirt road starts (ca 1 km from T.O.) there is a “malga” (typical hut on the Alps) always open in summer, with a bar and a restaurant of local products.
DECOLLI ESTERI – SLOVENIA
Lijak – Slovenia
Location: Lijak (Slo)
Direction: from S to W
Elevation: 585 mt ASL
Height difference: 520 mt above Landing (Lijak)
Number of ramps: 2
Helicopter landing space: Yes
The take-off, really appreciated by European paragliding pilots, will be unlikely used during our competition, but we have taken it into consideration because it could allow to set a task also with northern wind.
The site is well known because of its area protected by northern winds, especially in summer. The drawback is the limited height difference, although thermals usually offer good flying conditions also at low
altitudes. The area to open Hang Gliders is limited but remarkable maintenance works are in progress to create enough room to numerous Hang Gliders.
The access road can be used by any kind of vehicle.
Ajdovscina – Slovenia
Location: Ajdovscina (Slo)
Direction: from SE to W
Elevation: 860 mt ASL
Height difference: 760 mt above Landing (Ajdovscina)
Number of ramps: 2
Helicopter landing space: Yes
On this take-off, every year takes place the Winter Race, well known Hang Gliding competition. It can be easily reached by any kind of vehicle and offers plenty of room to open Hang Gliders. Few maintenance works could guarantee two or three take-off lines. The launch site is used with winds between SE and W. The height difference is not too much, but it has never been a problem during the past competitions.
ATTERRAGGIO UFFICIALE
Travesio (main landing site and Headquarters)
Location: Travesio (PN)
Elevation: 270 mt ASL
Helicopter landing space: Yes
Coordinates: N 46° 11′ 46” E 12° 51′ 22”
LThe landing field in Travesio is highly used by Hang Gliding and Paragliding pilots coming from all Europe. Pilots particularly like the perfect terrain conditions and the absence of obstacles, as well as the absence of strong
or turbulent winds in the hours of main thermal activity. The landing field offers toilets, showers and a restaurant. The parking area at the moment is not very large, but in the future it will be surely improved (a new project is in
progress).
